Scheduled Monument Precinct Development

Client: The Board of Trustees

In consultation with the incumbent architect, and heritage and community consultants, we are currently working with a major Somerset tourist attraction on significant development proposals. The aim is to submit a round one Heritage Lottery bid for the re-development of the existing site and improvements of its current facilities and community offering.

The site is Grade I Listed and a Scheduled Ancient Monument set centrally to a small community with strong historic and cultural links. It is staffed by a dedicated team including groundsmen, educators, curators and event managers all of whom have longterm relationships with the site.

Stage one of our work is to assist the Trustees in defining the scope of the brief for the project. Our role has been to create and conduct a series of Trustee and staff questionnaires which are to be complemented by visitor and business studies by Ruth Gofton and John McVerry of Heritage and Community with whom we are working in close collaboration.

From this stage we will develop a briefing document and sketch proposals for the new development which will include:

  • Design of new buildings within the most sensitive of historic settings
  • The design of new facilities tailored to suit the needs of the staff to improve the the facilities and reach of their department
  • Consideration of group and individual tourist site access and circulation
  • The provision of improved community facilities and access
  • Consideration of the route around the wider Parkland site
  • Intensive statutory and community consultation
  • Consideration of a possible link with surrounding attractions

This work will then support costings by Quantity Surveyors Bare, Leaning and Bare, and Ruth and John’s work in the preparation and submission of the HLF funding bid. This necessitates a highly open and collaborative working method, with a clear definition of roles and responsibilities. Architecturally we have new build, sensitive settings (historically and culturally) and the redevelopment of existing buildings - this is the kind of project and collaboration we relish.

From this work our clients will have a completely bespoke and targeted brief, business plan, design proposal and funding bid, founded on sound business strategies and considered consultation with the staff, visitors and local community.
